A place with such unique natural beauty and rich history naturally offers many sights to discover. Depending on your interests and the time you have available, you can choose what suits you best. Here are some suggested highlights:
Mount Athos – Mount Athos Cruise
Access to the monastic community is permitted to men only. There are daily routes to and from the eastern side of the peninsula from the port of Ierissos (by speedboat).
There are also daily routes to and from the western side from the port of Ouranoupoli (by speedboat, ferry, and sea taxi).
Daily cruise excursions around Mount Athos allow women as well to admire several of the impressive monasteries from a relatively close distance.
Aristotle’s Grove (Aristotle Park)
About 25 km from Ierissos, in the settlement of Stageira, you will find Aristotle’s Grove.
It is a themed park featuring original interactive instruments that operate according to the laws of nature described in Aristotle’s writings, especially in his work “Physics”.
You can also see the impressive statue of Aristotle and enjoy stunning views over the Gulf of Ierissos and Mount Athos.
Varvara Waterfalls
Hidden in a dense forest between Varvara and Olympiada, you will find two beautiful waterfalls.
After travelling around 40 km, you can reach them via a wonderful short walking path of about 10 minutes, with wooden bridges and magical scenery.
It’s a good idea to bring your swimsuit—resisting a refreshing dip may be difficult.
Drenia Islands
Between Ammouliani and Ouranoupoli lies the small island complex of Drenia.
The islets are uninhabited; however, the largest one features an organised beach with a beach bar/tavern. You can get there by boat from Ouranoupoli or by renting a small boat.
Ierissos Cultural Center
A cultural center dedicated to showcasing Athonite heritage and promoting the wider pre-Athos area, located in the center of Ierissos.
Among other experiences, visitors can enjoy a wonderful Mount Athos journey presentation while seated comfortably in the center’s digital 3D screening amphitheatre.
